What a carburetor rebuild actually needs
Most carburetors that end up on a bench did not need to come off. Ignition faults, vacuum leaks, and fuel delivery problems all produce symptoms that look exactly like a bad carburetor, and a rebuild kit will not fix any of them. This guide covers the diagnosis first, then the rebuild itself: what is in a kit and what is not, the parts that actually wear, how to clean without ruining the calibration, and the one adjustment that matters more than the rest.

It is written for American cars roughly 1950 through 1985, for somebody with hand tools and a garage. Measurements, fuel pressures, and float settings differ by carburetor, so pull those numbers from the factory service manual for your car or from the instruction sheet that comes in your kit.
Prove it is the carburetor first
A carburetor feeds every cylinder through the intake manifold. A real carburetor fault shows up across the whole engine, not at one cylinder. If you can trace a steady miss to one plug, one wire, or one cylinder, stop; the carburetor is not your problem. Pull the plugs and read them. Check for spark at each wire. On a points ignition, check point gap, dwell, and the condenser before anything else, then confirm the timing is where the manual says and that the vacuum advance holds vacuum.
Then hunt vacuum leaks. Hook a gauge to a manifold port and watch the needle at idle. A steady reading suggests the intake side is sealed; a low or drifting needle points at leaks, valve trouble, or timing. The usual leak points are the carburetor base gasket, intake manifold gaskets, the brake booster hose, the PCV hose, cracked vacuum lines, and worn throttle shafts. Fix leaks before you touch a jet or a mixture screw.
Then prove fuel is getting there
Starving at speed, stumbling under load, and dying after twenty minutes all look like carburetor trouble and usually are not. Check the supply side: a rusty tank, a plugged pickup sock, a soft rubber hose collapsing under suction, a clogged filter, a tired mechanical pump, or a fuel line routed too close to the exhaust.
Test with a pressure gauge and a flow test into a metal container. Your manual gives the pressure spec for your car. Too much pressure pushes fuel past the needle and seat and floods the carburetor, and people then blame the carburetor. Gas that has sat for a season turns to varnish and will gum up a freshly rebuilt carb within weeks, so start with fresh fuel.
What a rebuild kit contains, and what it does not
A basic kit gives you gaskets, o-rings, a needle and seat, an accelerator pump cup or diaphragm, check balls, an inlet screen, and assorted springs and clips. A master or premium kit usually adds the float, the power valve on carburetors that use one, and sometimes the choke pull-off.
What is not in any kit: throttle shafts and bushings, the throttle body casting, jets and metering rods, the choke thermostat, and linkage. Order the kit by the carburetor's own identification, which is a tag under a bolt, a stamping on the body, or a list number cast into the air horn. Do not order by year and engine. The same engine got different carburetors across applications, and the wrong kit puts the wrong needle and seat in your bowl.
The parts that actually wear
Gaskets harden, shrink, and leak, and replacing them is most of what a kit does. The needle and seat is next; the tip swells or the seat grooves, and the carb either floods or runs lean. The accelerator pump is third. Leather cups dry out, rubber cups harden, and diaphragms crack. Work the throttle by hand with the engine off and the air cleaner removed, and look for a clean squirt down the venturi. A dribble or nothing means the pump is finished, and that is your off-idle stumble.
Throttle shaft bushings are the item people skip. Grab the shaft at each end and wiggle it up and down. Any real play is an unmetered air leak that is worst at idle, and no rebuild kit fixes it. Check the float too. A brass float can take on fuel through a pinhole and sink; shake it and listen. A composite float can absorb fuel and get heavy. Either way the fuel level rises and the car runs rich.
Cleaning, and what modern gas does to old rubber
Take it apart completely and remove every piece of rubber, plastic, and fiber before anything goes near solvent. Some cleaners attack aluminum and zinc castings, so read the container and confirm it is safe for your carburetor's material. Immersion cleaner is caustic and will burn skin and eyes, so wear chemical-resistant gloves and splash goggles, work outdoors or with real ventilation, and lower and lift the parts basket slowly so nothing splashes back. Keep running water nearby to flush a spill off skin. Never run a drill bit or wire through a jet or a metering passage; you change the size and lose the calibration. Soak, then blow the passages out with compressed air with eye protection on.
Ethanol in pump gas is hard on old fuel system rubber. It dries and cracks it, it holds water that corrodes pot metal, and it lifts varnish out of the tank and lines and carries it into your clean carburetor. Replace every rubber part with current material, replace old rubber fuel hose with hose rated for today's fuel, and put an inline filter ahead of the carburetor. If the car sits for months at a time, use a fuel stabilizer or store it with the bowl drained.
Float level is the adjustment that matters most
The float sets the fuel level in the bowl, and that level shifts the mixture at every throttle position. Set it too high and you get rich running, a fuel smell, percolation after shutdown, and fuel dripping into the venturi on hard corners. Set it too low and you get a lean stumble under acceleration, hesitation in turns, and surging at cruise.
Set it dry with the bowl off, using the measurement in the factory service manual or the instruction sheet in your kit. The figure varies by carburetor and is not something to guess at. Set the float drop as well if your carburetor specifies one. If yours has a sight plug, check the level wet with the car on level ground: run the engine long enough to fill the bowl, then shut it off before you pull the plug, since fuel will run out of the hole if the level is high and a running engine puts a live fuel stream beside a hot exhaust manifold. Keep a rag and a catch pan under the plug and the extinguisher within reach. Get this right before you adjust anything else.
Do not chase jetting
Factory jetting is correct for a stock engine. When a car runs rich or lean, the cause is almost always a vacuum leak, timing, float level, a choke that will not open, or a plugged idle circuit. Rejetting to cover a leak hides the fault and creates a new problem at a different throttle position.
Check the choke before you suspect anything internal. A choke that stays partly closed once the engine is warm looks exactly like a carburetor jetted too rich. If you genuinely need a jetting change, for elevation, a bigger cam, or headers, change one size at a time, write down what you did, and read the plugs after real driving rather than after idling in the driveway.
When to send it out or buy a remanufactured unit
This is a judgment call, and it depends on the carburetor and on what your time is worth. Send it to a specialist when the throttle shaft bores are worn, since reaming and bushing needs a machine setup you probably do not have. Same for a cracked casting, a stripped threaded hole, a carburetor missing pieces for an odd application, or an emissions-era feedback carburetor with electronics in it.
Remanufactured quality varies a lot between suppliers. Confirm the unit is built for your exact application rather than a close relative, and expect to set the float, the idle mixture, and the choke yourself after it arrives. If your car's value depends on correct numbers, keep your original core even if you drive it on a replacement.
Fuel handling and fire
Gasoline vapor is what ignites, not the liquid, and vapor sinks and travels along the floor. Work outdoors or with the garage open, and never work on a fuel system near a water heater or furnace with a pilot light. Disconnect the battery ground before you open any fuel line.
Catch fuel in a metal container, plug open lines, and put fuel-soaked rags outside rather than in a pile in the corner. Keep an extinguisher rated for flammable liquids within arm's reach, not across the shop. Do not spray flammable cleaner on or near a running engine or a hot exhaust manifold. When you first start the car after the rebuild, put the air cleaner on, since it acts as a flame arrester, and stay clear of the carburetor while somebody cranks it.

Common questions
How do I know if it needs a full rebuild or just a cleaning?
If the carburetor has been sitting and the symptoms are a rough idle or a hesitation, a soak and a new set of gaskets and a needle and seat usually solves it. Go to a full rebuild when the accelerator pump is dead, the float is heavy or leaking, or the carburetor floods. Check the throttle shafts first either way, because loose shafts mean the carburetor needs machine work no kit can replace.
Which rebuild kit do I order for my car?
Order by the carburetor's own identification number, not by year and engine. Look for a metal tag under a bolt head, a stamping on the body, or a number cast into the air horn. Can I rebuild the carburetor without taking it off the car?
